Years ago, we came-up with a new “mouse-trap” for decorating your home, room, dorm, office, shop or man-cave. We were frustrated with buying posters that ripped, bent and were difficult to move from place-to-place.
Like us, people spend considerable time looking for ways to cover their bare walls with art, pictures, shelves, etc., while doors tend to be forgotten or overlooked.
As we sat around talking about this (yes, we had way too much time on our hands!), we looked at our poor doors and said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to decorate our doors the way we do our walls.”
This one unfiltered thought began a journey that introduced us to previously unknown places, new technologies, frustration, satisfaction, obstacles, achievements, wonderful people and a few who thought (and still think) we were crazy.
Thus, DoorSox was born, but the problem came in the “how” and “with what”? Every product we found for decorating a door was a cheap thin plastic requiring tape, tore easily, could not be reused and the quality of the graphics was poor.
Then, another spontaneous thought was expressed, “Let’s wrap the door the same way we do our mattress?” Of course, that prompted quizzical looks between us but we realized the “what” was answered, now we were left with the “how?”
We searched for a fabric that could stretch and “mold” itself to multiple door sizes, durable but thin enough not to interfere with the opening and closing of the door, strong enough to withstand repeated use, produce high-resolution graphic images, could be thrown in the washer without the colors fading or running, didn’t require an engineering degree to fold and store (unlike fitted mattress sheets) and would always be wrinkle-free. A daunting task to be sure.
Yet, after spending countless hours creating prototypes, experimenting with different materials, traveling down many dead-ends, we finally did it!
We decided on a blend of polyester and spandex that allowed us to get the results we desired and finally met all of our requirements.
Our adventure has taken us from manufacturing door covers for Halloween, Christmas and birthdays to where we are today…door covers for a wide variety of markets and interests, including the expansion of how to display your DoorSox.
We now include pre-installed corner grommets so you can cover your door or hang it on your wall as a tapestry. ~~You choose!
